About Worlds End Harem

World’s End Harem is a manga series written by LINK and illustrated by Kotaro Shono. The first part of the series was published in Shueisha’s online magazine Shōnen Jump+ from May 2016 to June 2020. A second part, titled World’s End Harem: After World, was published on the same platform from May 2021 to May 2023. The manga has 18 tankōbon volumes as of June 2023 and is licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment in North America under its Ghost Ship adult imprint.

The story follows Reito Mizuhara, who was cryogenically frozen in 2040 while waiting for a cure for his rare disease. When he wakes up five years later, he learns that a deadly virus called MK has emerged, killing 99.9% of the male population. Luckily, about one million men, including Reito, were put into cryostasis before being infected and survived.

Reito has discovered that he is one of five men in Japan who are immune to the MK Virus. As a result, he is obliged to participate in a breeding program where he must impregnate as many women as possible to help repopulate the world. As he investigates the secrets of the virus and tries to locate his missing friend, Elisa Tachibana, the series also provides an insight into the lives of the other immune men, each with their own unique situations.

The anime television series adaptation of the show was announced in May 2020. It was produced by Studio Gokumi and AXsiZ, with YΕ« Nobuta serving as the director and Tatsuya Takahashi as the scriptwriter. Masaru Koseki designed the characters, and the music was composed by Shigenobu Ookawa. The first episode aired on October 8, 2021, while subsequent episodes were postponed to January 2022 to ensure a thorough examination of the anime’s production.

Crunchyroll announced in August 2021 that they had acquired the license to stream the anime worldwide, except for Asian regions. Meanwhile, Muse Communication obtained the licensing rights to the South and Southeast Asia series.

The series got mixed reviews from critics. Although some critics appreciated its unique approach to the harem genre, others found fault with its semi-apocalyptic setting, which they felt was unsuitable for the harem format. According to Maxwell Freedman of Comic Book Resources, the harem genre has always been controversial and has faced criticism ranging from being seen as trashy and repetitive to being condemned as misogynistic.

World’s End Harem doesn’t address criticisms; it has some depth that may not be immediately apparent. The manga delves into the psychological effects of a female-only future and the resulting dystopian society instead of only portraying it as a paradise for men. However, it’s important to note that the main attraction of the manga is still the fanservice. The anime series has a small fanbase and has been cited as a failed one. This could likely be the reason why Worlds End Harem Season 2 got canceled.
