1899 TV Series Overview

The TV series 1899, about a German period mystery and science fiction, was created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. It premiered on Netflix on November 17, 2022, and received positive reviews. However, the series was cancelled in January 2023.

The series takes place in 1899 and tells the story of a group of European emigrants who are on a journey from Southampton, UK, to New York City, US, aboard a steamship called Kerberos. The series premiered with two episodes at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022, and was later released on Netflix on November 17, 2022. A making-of documentary called Making 1899 was also released alongside the series.

Although 1899 was the most-watched product in 58 countries on Netflix shortly after its release, the show was cancelled on January 2, 2023. Paul Tassi wrote about the cancellation of 1899 and other Netflix series in Forbes and expressed that he feels like Netflix is taking away his time. He finds it exhausting and thinks that if it’s exhausting for viewers, it must be even more so for the showrunners and actors. Tassi also noted that Netflix is filled with incomplete series, which is concerning, and something needs to change.

According to an article by David Opie on Digital Spy, there is a possibility that HBO or Prime Video could save the TV show. With that said, fans can still hope for 1899 season 2. Additionally, there is a small chance that Netflix could create a special episode or movie to give the story a proper conclusion, similar to what they did for sense after it was cancelled and had a large fan following.

According to Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic reviews, the series has been generally well-received. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an average rating of 6.80/10 and a 79% approval rating based on 28 reviews. The critical consensus on the website notes that the show effectively creates an eerie atmosphere and suspenseful storyline, though it may not have a completely satisfying ending.

On Metacritic, where ratings are weighted, the series scored 66 out of 100 based on 12 reviews, indicating a generally positive critical reception. According to Collider, 1899 is one of the best new TV shows of 2022. Meanwhile, MovieWeb rated it as the sixth-best TV show of the year.

Nevertheless, fans can still hope for a miracle and keep their fingers crossed.

It is difficult to predict what would be 1899 season 2 plot, given that the first season was left on an ambiguous note. However, if a second season had gone ahead, it can be assumed that more mysteries surrounding the steamship Kerberos would have been explored. We could have seen the crew unravelling more secrets of the ship while also learning more about the supernatural elements on board. Further secrets of Kerberos would likely have been revealed, as well as the fate of its crew’s passengers and their connections to each other. It could have even seen them discovering a way off the ship or a resolution to its mysterious nature.

1899 Season 2 Episodes

We had an overall episode count of 8 in the first season, while the exact episode length varied from 34-45 minutes. 1899 Season 2 Premier Date Expectation

As Netflix has cancelled the show, it isn’t easy to guess when a second season could have premiered. However, fans could have expected a premier date in 2023 or 2024 if a streaming service had picked up the series. That being said, these are just speculations, and nothing can be said for sure until some official announcement gets made about 1899 season 2.

1899 Season 2 Renewal Status

Well, chances are, 1899 season 2 won’t happen. Netflix has cancelled the show due to being unprofitable and thus, there is no renewal status for a second season. If HBO or Amazon Prime Video decide to pick up the series later on, then we can expect a new update from them regarding its renewal status. Until then, fans will have to be contented with just one season of this mysterious drama. And if you have some god memories of the show, do tell us in the comments section.
