About Tokyo Vice

The TV series Tokyo Vice, based on Jake Adelstein’s book of the same name and created by J.T. Rogers, premiered on HBO Max on April 7, 2022. It features Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe in prominent roles. The series has been renewed for a second season as of June 2022.

Jake Adelstein, an American journalist, moved to Tokyo in 1999. He took a Japanese written exam to join a major Japanese newspaper. He was successful and became their first foreign-born journalist. He started at an entry-level position and was mentored by a veteran detective in the vice squad. Jake delved into the dangerous world of the Japanese yakuza, despite the city’s belief that “murder does not happen in Tokyo”.

Initially planned as a movie in 2013, Tokyo Vice was supposed to feature Daniel Radcliffe as Adelstein, with Anthony Mandler directing. The project had progressed to a point where production was scheduled to begin in mid-2014. However, in June 2019, the decision was made to turn it into an eight-episode television series for WarnerMedia’s streaming service HBO Max.

The series had Ansel Elgort as executive producer, J. T. Rogers as a writer, and Destin Daniel Cretton as director. However, Michael Mann was later brought in to direct the pilot episode and serve as executive producer. The first season premiered on April 7, 2022, with three episodes available at once, followed by two episodes each week until the season finale on April 28, 2022. On June 7, 2022, HBO Max announced that the show would be renewed for a second season.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, 85% of 60 critic reviews have approved Tokyo Vice with an average rating of 7.6/10. The website’s critics’ consensus states that while the protagonist may not be very interesting, the intriguing depiction of Japan’s underworld and realistic setting make for an enjoyable neo-noir experience. Metacritic gave the show a 75 out of 100 score based on 27 critics, indicating generally positive reviews.”
