Fans loved watching Sam and Dean dealing with shapeshifters, demons, and creepers; they want more of the Winchesters and await Supernatural Season 16. Even though Supernatural was CW’s longest-running series, it ended with Season 15. Although it remains popular with viewers on Netflix, there is no news of Supernatural Season 16 happening. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins announced that they had decided to end the show to spend more time with their families. There won’t be a Season 16 of Supernatural, but there are still talks of reviving or rebooting the show.
Saying farewell to a long-running show is always difficult, especially as new viewers discover it on Netflix. Is it possible that the show will return for a 16th season? Let’s have a look at the update here.
What we Know about Supernatural Series
Supernatural is an American dark fantasy television series created by Eric Kripke. It was first broadcast on The WB on September 13, 2005, and subsequently became part of the successor The CW’s lineup. Starring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester, the series follows the two brothers as they hunt supernatural beings such as monsters, demons, and even gods while searching for their missing father.
The show originally ran for five seasons from 2005 to 2009 on The WB before moving to The CW for its sixth season in 2009–2010. Following a 6-month hiatus after Season 7 concluded in May 2012, Supernatural returned with its eighth season that October. We had the last season of the show premiered in November 2020, and since then, there hasn’t been a word we heard about the show’s renewal.
Throughout the series run, actors have taken over directing duties; Jensen Ackles has directed six episodes of the show, while Misha Collins has helmed three. The series follows Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), two brothers who travel throughout an alternate universe searching for their father, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who mysteriously disappeared when Sam was a baby.
Along the way, they battle supernatural creatures such as vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and other monsters. The brothers also encounter angels sent by God to assist them in their missions. Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver), a close family friend and hunter, often aided them. Throughout the series, Sam and Dean are aided in their supernatural hunting adventures by various female and male characters who have special abilities or knowledge of the paranormal world.
The Winchester brothers also have an enemy known as the demon Azazel (Fredric Lehne). He is responsible for releasing various evil forces worldwide, including Lilith (Katie Cassidy), a powerful demon seeking to bring about an apocalypse. Other villains that the Winchesters face throughout their journey include demons such as Alastair (Christopher Heyerdahl), the mysterious rogue angel Castiel (Misha Collins), and many other monsters. Supernatural also features multiple crossover episodes with other popular series such as Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and The X-Files. The narrative of the Supernatural is heavily influenced by mythology, folklore, and urban legends.
The success of Supernatural can be attributed to its dedicated fan base, which has made it one of the most-watched shows on television since its inception in 2005. Fans make up a large part of the show’s audience and are often seen at conventions, online forums, fan sites, and other events related to the show.
Fans of Supernatural have also created several charitable organizations based on the show, such as “Random Acts,” which provides volunteer opportunities for fans interested in helping those in need. The success of Supernatural has also led to an increase in merchandise featuring characters from the series, including action figures, novels, t-shirts, posters, and more. Supernatural has been praised for its unique concept, dark tone, twist-ending episodes, and ability to combine horror with comedy.
