Alaska Daily-Overview

Al was a crime drama TV series on ABC, created by Tom McCarthy and starring Hilary Swank as a journalist in Anchorage, Alaska. It aired from October 6, 2022, to March 30, 2023, and was cancelled after one season in May 2023. On July 1, 2023, it was removed from Hulu.

The main character in the movie, Eileen (played by Hilary Swank), is a journalist from New York who relocates to Alaska in search of a fresh start and to redeem herself both personally and professionally. She joins a daily newspaper in Anchorage, where she collaborates with a colleague named Roz Friendly to investigate and publish reports on the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Alaska.

Tom McCarthy wrote and directed the pilot for the series “The Pilot.” Peter Elkoff is the showrunner, and the show is produced by Tom McCarthy’s Slow Pony Productions, 20th Television, and Hilary Swank. The series was filmed in New Westminster, British Columbia, from August 8, 2022, to January 5, 2023.

The “Alaska Daily” series was based on the 2019 Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica article series called “Lawless: Sexual Violence in Alaska,” along with additional reporting by lead reporter Kyle Hopkins. The show’s producers worked with the Anchorage Daily News and its president, Ryan Binkley, who are both credited as executive producers. However, it’s important to note that “Alaska Daily” is not dramatising the specific events described in the “Lawless” project. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled by ABC after only one season on May 12, 2023.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, 74% of critics gave Alaska Daily a positive review, giving it an average rating of 6.6 out of 10. Nineteen critics were involved in this evaluation, and the Rotten Tomatoes critic’s consensus noted that the show was somewhat caught between network TV and edgier streaming content and that its message about the value of local journalism was important.

Metacritic used a weighted average based on 15 critics to give Alaska Daily a 67 out of 100, indicating that reviews were generally positive.
