When Calls the Heart is a Canadian-American television drama series inspired by Janette Oke’s book of the same name from her West Canadian series. The series began airing on the Hallmark Channel in the United States on January 11, 2014, and on April 16, 2014 on Super Channel in Canada. On July 25, 2018, Hallmark announced that season six would premiere on February 24, 2019.
The show focuses on Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town more recently renamed Hope Valley after an explosion caused by mine owner Micah Torrance killed most of the men and left many widows. Elizabeth adjusts to her new home and finds comfort in the friendship of Abigail Stanton (Lori Loughlin), a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, was killed in the explosion.
With some diligent hard work, she can eventually make a name for herself amongst her students and in Coal Valley as an independent woman and teacher. The show follows the ups and downs of life in Hope Valley as Elizabeth, Abigail, and their fellow citizens ponder how best to use their newfound independence. In addition to this focus on self-sufficient frontier living, When Calls The Heart also features elements of romance between its characters as they search for love in difficult times.
As Hope Valley rebuilds itself from the tragedy that occurred, its residents draw on their deepest reserves of strength and courage to help each other through some of life’s most trying times.
