The second season of Sanditon on BritBox and PBS Masterpiece (which begins this Friday) ended on a major – not to mention devastating – cliffhanger for fans, so the third season of the Regency-era period drama can’t come soon enough. The exquisite Jane Austen adaptation will conclude with its third and final series, but what lies ahead for Charlotte Heywood, Georgiana Lambe, and the rest of the town’s residents? Here’s everything we know about Sanditon season 3: an anticipated release date, cast list, characters, plot synopsis, trailer video, and more.

What is Sanditon All About?

Sanditon is a British Regency-era drama television series adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon. The show was created by Andrew Davies and directed by Simon Langton. Sanditon aired on ITV in the United Kingdom and on PBS in the United States as part of the Masterpiece anthology series.

The first season of Sanditon consists of eight episodes and aired from 25 August to 13 October 2019. The second season, also consisting of eight episodes, began airing on BritBox on 21 January 2021 and will conclude on 11 March 2021.

Sanditon follows Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), a young woman from a small village who moves to Sanditon, a coastal resort town undergoing rapid transformation due to the machinations of its primary patron, Lady Denham (Anne Reid).

Sanditon is also home to a large cast of characters with various ulterior motives, including the town’s founder, Sir Edward Denham (Jack Fox); his younger brother and heir, Arthur Denham (Harry Richardson); the Whitby sisters, Diana (Crystal Clarke) and Susan (Kate Ashley), who run a boarding house for invalid ladies; estate agent Tom Parker (Kris Marshall); Reverend William dimensional-Dalton (Robert James-Collier); Miss Lambe (Tamsin Greig), a wealthy heiress from the West Indies; and Sidney Parker (Theo James), Tom’s dashing older brother.

Who created Sanditon?

English author Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel was Sanditon. Just two months before her death in March 1817, she began writing it and completed 11 chapters; however, the story remained unfinished. It was adapted into a TV show by well-known period drama producer Andrew Davies. Some of his previous successes include War & Peace, Les Miserables and Pride and Prejudice.

Rory Douglas (The Cazalet Chronicles, The Last Kingdom), who wrote four episodes of Sanditon season 1, also developed seasons 2 and 3, assuming the role of main writer and executive producer. Davies, who first created the series, produced several installments again.

What’s the plot of Sanditon season 3?

The third season of Sanditon has yet to be officially announced, although series creator Justin Young has given interviews to the press. The connection between Charlotte and Colbourne will be further explored in Season 3, focusing on their relationship in Season 2 and their kiss in the final episode. Of course, there’s a snag: Charlotte is betrothed to someone else.

“As season 3 begins, we find Charlotte engaged to Ralph,” Sanditon showrunner Justin Young told Decider. “Colbourne loves her, and she loves him back–we know that much. But now she’s with Ralph. How will everything unfold?”

Who’s in the cast of Sanditon season 3?

Sanditon Season 3

While we wait for an update on the cast list for season 3 of Sanditon, it’s safe to assume that all the main characters from season 2 will appear again. They are:

  • Alexander Vlahos as Charles Lockhart
  • Anne Reid as Lady Denham
  • Ben Lloyd-Hughes as Alexander Colbourne
  • Crystal Clarke as Georgiana Lambe
  • Frank Blake as Captain Declan Fraser
  • Jack Fox as Sir Edward Denham
  • Kate Ashfield as Mary Parker
  • Kris Marshall as Tom Parker
  • Lily Sacofsky as Clara Brereton
  • Maxim Ays as Captain William Carter
  • Rose Williams as Charlotte Heywood
  • Rosie Graham as Alison Heywood

The news has been confirmed- Tom Weston-Jones will not be continuing his role as Colonel Francis Lennox, and Charlotte Spencer will also not return as Esther Babbington. Justin Young, the showrunner for Sanditon seasons 2 and 3, explained to Decider: “I don’t think it would count as spoiling much to say that we won’t see Lennox again in season 3. He’s kind of gone.”

“I believe Esther is content with what she has at the end of season 2. She’s married and has a child she loves, so her story is finished.

It appears logical to anticipate Sanditon series 3 to premiere on Britbox in Spring 2023 and then on ITV in Autumn 2023, just like Season 2 – but at this time, that’s all speculation. PBS Masterpiece Theatre US airs Sanditon.

How many episodes is Sanditon Season 3?

We have yet to receive an official announcement, but we believe Sanditon series 3 will have six episodes, like its predecessors.

Will there be a Sanditon Season 4?

Fans will be disappointed to hear that there won’t be more episodes – When Britbox rescued the show from early cancellation, it was for two additional seasons only, and Series 3 will be the series’ last. At the very least, the show will conclude on its own terms this time around.
