Disney is thrilled to announce that ‘The Princess Diaries 3” is currently in production! Eighteen years after the second film’s release, fans can finally rejoice. Many hope to see their favourite cast members return – Anne, Julie and Chris. The on-screen couple Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine stole hearts in the last movie, and fans eagerly anticipate their reunion. The Princess Diaries movies have always shown one of the best tropes – a girl coming into her own with a makeover. We can’t wait to see what this next instalment has in store.
Reacher writer Aadrita Mukerji is currently working on a script for a new addition to the regal saga, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sources say it will continue Hathaway’s widely-adored films rather than be a fresh reboot. The Academy Award-winning lead has yet to agree to return, but that isn’t surprising as the film is still in its early stages.
Hathaway’s previous statement to ETÂ about her desire to work in Princess Diaries 3 alongside Andrews makes this new development feel very plausible. “I would more than entertain it; I’m pulling for it,” she told the publication. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, we would make it work. We would go to where she was, put a green screen behind her, and make it happen.” Debra Martin Chase, who produced the previous two instalments, is tapped to reprise her role for the new film alongside The Other Woman writer Melissa K. Stack, who is slated to executive produce.

Princess Diaries 3 Plot Summary
If the movie does continue Mia’s story, there are various ways it could go since the sequel veered in a completely different direction from the books. In the book, Mia ends up marrying her best friend’s brother, Michael, after a lengthy relationship. However, Robert Schwartzman, who played Michael in the first movie, didn’t return for its sequel and was replaced by Chris Pine as Lord Nicholas Devereaux- Mia’s love interest and potential heir to the Genovian throne.
After Mia was crowned Queen of Genovia, she changed the law so anyone could rule- even if they weren’t married. Nicholas then professed his love for her. In addition, Julie Andrews’s character proposed to her bodyguard, Joe (Héctor Elizondo). A third movie might explore how different Mia’s reign is compared to her grand-mère’s or give us an update on her romantic life. There are many possibilities, including whether she did marry Nicholas, a return from Michael, or something else entirely.
Will Anne Hathaway Return in Princess Diaries 3?
According to THR, Anne Hathaway does not have a deal in place to return as princess Mia Thermopolis. However, the actress publicly said she would like to reprise her role and supported the third outing.
“I would love to make it happen,” Hathaway told ET in October 2022. “If there’s any way we could get Julie Andrews involved, we would do whatever it takes. We would go to her location, set up a green screen, and make it work.”
According to Andrews, although it’d be great, a sequel is unlikely because “it’s too far down the line now.” In an interview with THR, she explained: “There was talk of a sequel many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And [director] Garry [Marshall] then did leave us [he died in 2016].”
In addition to DeGeneres, Mandy Moore—who played Mia’s rival, Lana Thomas—also stated she would be open to filming a sequel during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.
