Mobile Suit Gundam Season 3 Release Date, Cast, Plot and Trailer
The anime series has just completed its second season with a bang, and fans are already curious to know about Mobile Suit Gundam Season 3. The announcement of Mobile Suit Gundam season 3 being approved is causing great excitement among fans of Mecha. Despite this, the Gundam series has not commented on the possibility of a G-Witch revival. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury is one of the best-selling series of 2023 thanks to its compelling storyline, thought-provoking themes, and fascinating characters. The show has captured the hearts of fans worldwide, including long-time Gundam enthusiasts and those new to anime. Here is what you should know about the upcoming season.
Mobile Suit Gundam: With From Mercury
“The Witch from Mercury” is a new addition to the widely known Gundam franchise, a Japanese mecha anime series that began airing on TBS and MBS in October 2022. Directed by Hiroshi Kobayashi and Ryō Andō and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, the series features Suletta Mercury, a teenage girl from the planet Mercury who enrolls in an academic institution managed by megacorporations. The kids of influential CEOs attend the school, and Suletta is there by her mother’s order.
The Witch from Mercury is the first Gundam series to be aired during the Reiwa era in Japan. It is also the first mainline production in seven years since Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. Additionally, it is the first TV show in the Gundam franchise to feature a female and LGBTQ protagonist. The anime’s storyline revolves around capitalism and political corruption. Its style draws inspiration from Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the witch trials, which also inspire the titular Gundam technology.
At the Vanadis Institute, researchers developed an advanced brain-computer interface called “GUND” through the Stella 101 project. This interface allows the human nervous system to control artificial appendages and organs to help individuals survive in space’s challenging conditions.
The technology, known as the “GUND Format,” was developed for military purposes after receiving funding from Ochs Earth, a mobile suit manufacturer. This led to the production of GUND-ARMS, mobile suits utilizing the GUND Format to enhance pilot performance. Unfortunately, extensive usage of GUND-ARMS resulted in pilots being seriously injured or killed.
The Mobile Suit Development Council, headed by leading mobile suit development companies, has permanently banned the GUND Format and its applications. Council member Delling Rembran has sent Dominicus, a special forces team, to destroy the Vanadis research facility Fólkvangr and eliminate all evidence of the technology.
Unfortunately, the attack resulted in the deaths of everyone on board except for mobile suit test pilot Elnora Samaya and her four-year-old daughter Ericht Samaya who survived. After the GUND Format was developed, the team predominantly consisting of women responsible for it was shunned and labeled “witches.”
In Ad Stella 122, 21 years after the Vanadis incident, Suletta Mercury moves from Mercury to the Asticassia School of Technology. This institute is managed by the megacorporation Benerit Group. When Suletta reaches there, she meets Miorine Rembran, a girl trying to escape her controlling father.
They have different ambitions and goals, so their paths cross at the academy. Suletta will need to demonstrate her skills as a pilot as she joins the academy’s Gundam Aerial, a mobile suit designed with prohibited GUND Format technology.
Critics have praised The Witch from Mercury for its writing, characters, animation, voice acting, dark drama, and unique take on the classic Gundam formula. The show’s first season was given a 9/10 by IGN, which praised its drama and striking imagery. Polygon also gave the first season a positive review, stating that the series is becoming the “ultimate Gundam show,” and is enjoyable for fans of the franchise and newcomers.
According to Anime News Network’s Kim Morrissy, the series has good emotional moments and has received positive feedback. On the other hand, Game Rant’s Harry Nugraha was not as impressed with the school life drama in the first season but acknowledged the “thrilling combat scenes” and felt the series was improving towards the end. The first season was also listed as the third-best anime of 2022 by Vulture.
Many people have praised Mamiko Noto’s portrayal of Prospera, citing her impressive acting skills and the nuanced nature of her character. Gizmodo even drew comparisons between Prospera and Char Aznable from the Gundam franchise, noting similarities such as their use of masks and their complex personalities.
Christopher Farris from Anime News Network was also impressed with Prospera, stating that she made for a compelling villain and that her story was highly engaging. It’s the received love from the fans that creators of the series will likely consider Mobile Suit Gundam Season 3 in near future.
