The nation today greets Ms Draupadi Murmu on winning the 15th presidential election of India after a contesting round, the voting for which was held on July 18th 2022. Ms Murmu will take the oath of office on July 25th 2022 in the presence of the current CJI (Chief justice of India), N V Ramana. The counting of votes was undertaken by the Election Commission today (July 21st 2022), beginning at 11 am in the Parliament house of the national capital. The joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha lost by a count of 987 votes. Ms Murmu was the nominated face of the BJP led NDA (National Democratic Alliance).

The president was elected by the members of the electoral college, comprising of the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and legislative assemblies of all the States as well as the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Hailing from the state of Odisha, Draupadi Murmu becomes the first tribal president and the second female president of India. Mrs Murmu has held many political positions in her career since 1997. She belongs to the country’s third largest scheduled tribe community, the Santhal tribe. Born on June 20th 1958, the 64 year old veteran has also functioned as the ex-governor of Jharkhand and was held responsible for some vital ministries under her entire political tenure. Before entering into politics Ms Draupadi Murmu started her professional career as a teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre, Rairangpur in 1997.

The post retirement benefits for the president include a monthly pension of rupees 1.5 lakhs per month, staff expenses up to rupees 60,000, free travel with a companion by train and air etc.

She has two siblings, Bhagat Tudu and Sarani Tudu. Married to Shyam Charan Murmu who died in 2014 as a bank officer, she was blessed with two sons and a daughter. The two sons died in the years 2009 and 2014. Her daughter Itishri Murmu works as a bank worker.

After serving as an assistant teacher at Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre, Rairangpur (1994 – 1997) and then as a junior assistant in the irrigation and power department, the government of Odisha (1979 – 1983), Ms Draupadi Murmu won as the councillor and became the vice chairperson Rairangpur. When will the Draupadi Murmu term end?

Ms Draupadi Murmu will be serving the office of president for a tenure of 5 years starting from July 25th 2022. Assuming no uncertainties to her health and other foreseen circumstances under which she would be obliged to resign from the office of the president, Ms Draupadi Murmu would end her term on July 25th 2027, after completing five years in her office. She would continue to sit in the office even after the completion of five years, given that either no new elections had taken place or no new president had been elected till then. She can also be re-elected as the president, given that she contests the following polls as there is no cap on a president’s re-election.
