Aspiring candidates who wish to pursue a career in research can appear for the DBT JRF Exam. This exam is conducted by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The main aim of this exam is to provide financial assistance to deserving students who wish to pursue M.Sc. or PhD programmes in the field of Biological Sciences from Indian Universities/Institutions. Eligible and interested candidates can apply for the exam through the official website.

What is DBT JRF Exam?

The DBT Exam is an entrance examination conducted by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. As stated above, the main aim of this exam is to provide financial assistance to meritorious students willing to pursue M.Sc. or Ph.D. programmes in Biological Sciences from reputed Indian Universities and colleges. The exam is held annually, and the selected candidates receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 25,000/- during their tenure of research.

After completing their undergraduate or post-graduation degree, some aspiring DBT experts take the DBT JRF Exam (DBT BET JRF Exam) to apply for the junior research fellowship.

Two lists will be published in this exam:

Category I – Candidates are eligible to apply for a PhD fellowship to study in India at reputed Institute of India.

Category II – Candidates can be chosen for a DBT project and receive a fellowship worth NET/GATE.

Eligibility Criteria for DBT Exam:

The following are the eligibility criteria for appearing in the DBT JRF Exam:

  • Candidates must have completed their B.Sc./B.Tech./M.Sc./M. Tech. degree in Biological Sciences from a recognized university with at least 60% marks (or equivalent grade point).
  • Candidates belonging to the SC/ST/OBC categories are eligible for a 5% relaxation in marks.
  • Candidates must have completed their degree within the age limit of 28 years. Age relaxation is provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories per government norms.

Candidates must appear for a written test, followed by an interview. The written test will consist of objective type questions from the following subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

The duration of the written test is 3 hours, and the maximum number of marks that can be scored is 100. Candidates who qualify for the written test will be shortlisted for the interview round. The final merit list will be prepared based on marks obtained in the written test and interview.

How Many Attempts for DBT Exam?

Candidates in the DBT JRF Eligibility may take as many tries as necessary until reaching the minimum age requirement of 28 years for the general category and up to three attempts beyond that limit if other categories are eligible.

When is the exam for DBT JRF?

On the Ministry of Science & Technology’s (GOI) official website, the Department of Biotechnology has announced the DBT JRF 2022 exam date in a notification. The exam is held every March-April and at various sites across India. The DBT JRF Exam application process will be released in January.
